Performances of my piece Empire’s Grandchild:

“Empire’s Grandchild is a 3-minute expression of the musical mash from which I am made. I have always felt a deep connection to the stabilising drones of Carnatic music…and also to their angry cousins underpinning ‘90s grunge in the West. I wanted to create something which draws together these elements from opposite sides of the world which, to me, have so much in common.

“Empire’s Grandchild is written in my voice, the voice of a British woman borne of Sri-Lankan parents living in England today. As I have increasingly used my voice to call out racial injustice in our country, I have increasingly faced disbelief, outrage, and exclusion by certain ‘establishment bastions’. I have broken the Model Minority ‘code’.

“I’m not sorry. Here are some sounds to express that.”
